Bartholomew Legate - England - 17th Century

Post by TJ »

Bartholomew Legate (or Bartholomew Legatt), c. 1575 - March 18, 1612. Last person burned in London for heresy (second-to-last in all England).

-The Writ of King James I to burn Legate. Source

-Legate had rejected the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds and stopped praying to Jesus. Source

-An 'Arian,' comely looks, black complexion, about 40 years old, bold spirit, confident, fluent tongue, excellently skilled in the scriptures. King James tried to prove Christ's Supreme Deity to him on the assumption that he prayed to Christ; he didn't. His 'damnable Tenets' are listed. Source
